If the pain of arthritis cannot be controlled through other methods, Dr. Sammer may recommend a joint replacement or joint fusion surgery. If he determines that a joint fusion is best for your situation, he will use a procedure called arthrodesis. In this surgery, Dr. Sammer fuses together the bones of the arthritis joint to create a knuckle that is stronger, more stable, and pain-free. Not all joints are good candidates for joint fusion, and Dr. Sammer may recommend a joint replacement in its place.
