If the pain of arthritis cannot be controlled through other methods, Dr. Sammer may recommend a joint replacement or joint fusion surgery. If he determines that a joint replacement is best for your situation, he will use a procedure called arthroplasty. In this surgery, Dr. Sammer removes the damaged joint completely and replaces it with an artificial implant or donor tissue, in order to relieve pain and restore shape and function. Not all joints are good candidates for joint replacement, and Dr. Sammer may recommend a joint fusion in its place.
